CSW68: Girls’ poverty and climate change: gaps and solutions

19 Mar
17:30-19:00 (GMT)
GAGE
In-person parallel event
UN Church Centre New York

Climate change has increasingly become the one of the most critical global challenges facing adolescent girls. The intersection of gender inequality and age-related risks, leaves many girls in low-and middle-income (LMIC) countries and humanitarian contexts facing unique and compounding challenges due to the climate crisis.

During this open-invite event at CSW68, research will be presented from the Gender and Adolescence Global Evidence (GAGE) programme, a 10-year mixed methods research and evaluation study following the lives of 20,000 adolescents in the Global South from 2016 to 2026. By showcasing the harmful impact of climate change across the domains of education, health and violence/harmful traditional practices for girls, our research also underscores opportunities for climate justice action and leadership across research, policy and programming. We will draw on research findings from three distinct contexts: Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Lebanon.

The event will feature conversations with experts, practitioners and youth activists, and showcase solutions to mitigate girls’ marginalisation in the face of climate impacts, shining a spotlight on the climate justice movement and localized girl-and youth-led advocacy and programming efforts.
